"Welcome to the Fantasy Zone. Get Ready!!" These are the words that were excitedly blasted out at the very start of Sega's legendary Space Harrier.

It was a simple game presented in a fantastic setting called the 'Fantasy Zone'. The player controlled a flying gunman and his goal was to shoot or avoid enemies and defeat a boss at the end of each level. Everything about Space Harrier commanded your attention. The imaginative enemy designs ranged from stunning robots and dragons to bizarre stone heads and bouncing mushrooms. The stage was bursting with sound effects while the thumping soundtrack complemented the game's intense action. All this craziness was played out over colourful, chequered levels and rendered in breathtaking, sprite-scaled 3D.

Although Space Harrier was available as an upright or seated cabinet, an arcade of any worth would opt for the deluxe 'rolling' cabinet. This imposing machine featured a seat with headrest mounted speakers, seat-belt and two motors that would tilt the cabinet according to the game's controls.

Released in 1985, the hardware behind Space Harrier was a true powerhouse. It was leagues above the competition and allowed Sega to follow up with more legendary hits like Outrun and After Burner.
