The mod subculture of the 1950s and 60s, like most youth lifestyles, was centred around fashion and music. It was the urban reflection of an affluent post-war Britain with a desire to reject the old for all-things cool, clean and modern.
Mod music including Jazz, R&B, British beat and Jamaican ska accompanied the fashion's focus for a smooth, crisp look. Sharp tailored suits, thin ties and miniskirts were the uniform and the humble scooter provided the transportation. Many mods customised their scooters with extra wing mirrors and lights, and they were often emblazoned with Union Jacks and the Royal Air Force insignia. Mod's influence on music and fashion can still be seen today.
The release of Pac-Man in 1980 coincided with the mod revival and the character's silhouette is as iconic as they come. The RAF target has since become synonymous with mod culture and combines perfectly with the silhouette of video gaming's own round icon.
