Ahh, Pong... Often considered to be the world's first...Created by Atari in 1980, 'Missile Command' was an immensely popular arcade game.
The premise, as always, is relatively simple. Protect your six cities from nuclear attack.
You take control of three anti-missile batteries, which you can use to destroy the endless barrage of ballistic missiles before they hit their targets. As each level progresses the game becomes faster and more difficult.
Missile Command had an interesting interface, different from most arcades at the time. Rather than utilise a joystick, Missile Command had a 'trackball' which controlled a crosshair on the screen, and three buttons, one for each of the anti-missile batteries.
Interestingly enough, Missile Command contained a 'bug' which could theoretically allow someone to play indefinitely. After scoring 810,000 points, a player would be awarded 176 bonus cities. After 256 levels, the game speed would reset to its easiest level.
Missile Command was ported to the home Atari console systems, and since has been cloned to pcs, consoles, phones and web pages.
